Motorsport & sustainability: Nico Rosberg and Lucas Di Grassi at the “SAFE Racing”

“United to fight climate change”: this is the message that the Formula 1 and Formula E world champions, Nico Rosberg and Lucas Di Grassi, shared with the Master SAFE in “Energy Resources Management” students, in occasion of the “SAFE Racing. Innovation, technology & sustainable mobility” event.

Innovation and new technological solutions are key factors for the increasingly efficient electric power train competitions, as in the case of the FIA Formula E World Championship, the FIM ENEL Moto WORLD CUP, and the newest Extreme E and UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series.

These breathtaking competitions take place in historic circuits and iconic cities, but also in deserts, forests, glaciers, seas and lakes of our Planet.

That is the case of the latest e-motorsport competition Extreme E: “The idea is to bring electric SUV in the most extreme and spectacular places of the world – this is what Alejandro Agag, founder of this competition and Formula E Chairman, highlighted at the opening of the debate – it arises from the necessity to draw the attention of the public opinion on the damage caused by the effects of climate change, stimulating the new generations to be an active part of this change”.

The sport key role in promoting sustainable initiatives and social responsability was deepened – during the workshop – by Raffaele Chiulli, President of SAFE, GAISF (Global Association of International Sports Federations) and  UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique): “Through our initiatives, we are not only able to encourage action, but also shine a spotlight on sport’s significant contribution in promoting awareness for sustainability”.

A new important sustainable initiative in motorsport is the UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series, the world’s first electric powerboat championship.  Rodi Basso, CEO at  E1 Series, has declared: “Through this competition we will accelerate the spread of electric technology in the marine industry, combining impressive technological progress with the entertaining aspect of motorsport”.

Francesco Venturini, CEO at Enel X, from the enterprises point of view underlined “Sustainability must be an accessible value for all. Enel X’s active involvement in motorsport competition shows our commitment to constantly promoting the development of global electric mobility”.

From motorsport to energy: Stefano Besseghini, President of the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA) declared at the conclusion of the Ceremony: “We must be aware that the energy transition is a complex subject to address. It is necessary a multilateral approach and the contribution of all parties involved”.
